What To Expect
A space where you can simply be yourself.
Starting counselling can feel like a big step. You might feel nervous, unsure of what to say, or even wonder whether your concerns are “serious enough” to seek support.
You don’t need to know exactly what you need before you arrive.
Our sessions are a space for you to slow down, feel heard and begin making sense of what you’re experiencing.
Your first session
Your first session is about getting to know each other and understanding what has brought you to counselling.
We’ll talk about what is happening in your life, what you’d like support with and what you hope to get from counselling. We may also explore some of your history and relationships where this feels relevant.
You are always in control of how much you share and when.
There is no expectation that you need to tell your whole story in the first session.
Finding the right approach
Everyone is different, which means counselling shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.
We’ll work collaboratively together to understand what feels right for you and develop goals that are meaningful to your circumstances.
Depending on what you need, our work may involve exploring emotions and experiences, understanding patterns in relationships, developing emotional regulation skills, building communication strategies, strengthening boundaries, working through past experiences, or finding practical ways to navigate current challenges.
I may gently challenge you when I believe it could support your growth, but this will always be done with compassion, respect and curiosity.
- You don’t have to perform.
- You don’t need to arrive with the right words.
- You don’t need to know exactly why you feel the way you do.
- And you certainly don’t need to have everything figured out.
- You can come exactly as you are.
My role is not to tell you how to live your life. It is to walk alongside you, help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and support you in making choices that feel right for you.
What happens after your session?
At the end of each session, we’ll take a moment to reflect on what we’ve explored and consider what you may need moving forward.
Sometimes you may leave with something practical to think about or practise between sessions. Other times, the most important thing may simply be having had the opportunity to feel heard and understood.
There is no prescribed number of sessions. Some people benefit from short-term support around a particular challenge, while others choose longer-term counselling as they work through more complex experiences.
We’ll regularly check in about your progress and whether counselling continues to meet your needs.
- You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going.
- You just have to be willing to take the first step.
Take your next step.
You don’t need to wait until things feel overwhelming before reaching out. If you’re ready to begin exploring what is happening for you, I’m here to walk alongside you on your journey
